Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Uva ursi (bearberry) leaves are a urinary system astringent.
Because they are diuretic and antiseptic, they have been used to help bedwetting, bladder infections, cystitis, kidney congestion and stones.
They are also found in prostate remedies.
Urine may need to be alkaline for the herb to have the most effect.
Sodium bicarbonate can be used to increase alkalinity for short times but a vegetable diet is best.
Uva ursi is sometimes recommended as an aid for diabetics.
Because uva ursi reduces blood circulation to the uterus, it helps reduce after birth hemorrhaging and helps to shrink the womb afterwards.
For the same reason, large amounts should not be used during pregnancy to avoid poor circulation to the fetus.
Will sometimes color the urine dark green or brownish-green; this is harmless.
